Taroko National Park is one of nine in Taiwan, named after the landmark gorge of the park, Taroko. The myth goes that, on seeing the the beauty of the Pacific when he walked out of the gorge, a tribesman of the Truku indigenous people cried "Taroko!" and so the gorge was named. It's also nicknamed the Marble Gorge as it and the surrounding area are well-known for an abundant supply of marble - the gorge itself was carved into the marble by the erosive power of the Leewoo Ho River.
