From Nagasaki, our next destination was Shimabara, intending to drop in on the way in Unzen - with its hot springs (noting the nearby town of Obama - wonder whether Barack noticed his namesake town when he was here for the G7!).
Through Unzen, high-temperature hot springs and gases erupt violently from everywhere - and what a strong sulphur smell,
we took a side turn onto a loop onto the Nita Pass across Unzen NP
where azaleas turn the sides of Mount Unzen pink
And then onto Shimabara. Its five-story white castle
with impressive 360m x 1260m moats - 15m deep and 30m wide
Enormous hotel room...
