DAY 11 - VIEWS OF THE CITY AND SEOUL'S LANTERN FESTIVAL PARADE - SATURDAY 7 MAY

The 236.7m Seoul Tower, open since October 1980, sits atop Namsan Mountain (243m)

its observatory offers panoramic views of Seoul and the surrounding areas

including Seoul City Wall (5 and 8m high and 18.6km long)

Back on the ground, we explored the actual wall

Every year, in honour of Buddha's birthday, many cities hang lanterns, some lotus-shaped, in the streets, and host cultural events and shows (one of which we stumbled on)

which included making a new friend

and Saturday night culminates with a Lotus Lantern Festival (symbolically transmitting the wisdom and compassion of the Buddha) - we finally worked out what all of those costumes were for... About ten thousand people must've taken part in the parade - schools, universities and every temple within miles of Seoul of guess. Luckily we bagged front-row seats and settled down for the parade itself.

It's BIG...  I'll just let you enjoy

Who doesn't love a millipede dragon

or one which breathes fire

Marvellous
