Before leaving Jiji, we visited a nearby temple which suffered very badly in the Jiji earthquake which took place at 01:47 on 21 September 1999; 7.3 on the Richter Scale, 2,145 people were killed and 11,305 injured, and damage was caused to the tune of 300 billion New Taiwanese dollars (US$10bn). It was the second-deadliest quake in recorded history in Taiwan and the temple remains partly untouched in memory.
We got excited to see this - though there wasn't the slightest evidence of anything (no one has seen a Formosan clouded leopard for years so I think they were teasing us)
as we visited Longshan Temple in Lugang. It dates from 1786 and its subdued colours and style are in marked contrast to other, more ornate temples that we've seen
and stopped off to watch some professional steamed pork bun makers
