Duncan's intended route through the Mount Aso region to Kitakyushu (at the very end of the island of Kyushu) turned out to be thwarted by the 16 April earthquake (magnitude 7). Lovely drive through green hills ended with the road closed and rows of houses enveloped in identical blue tarpaulin
This is how an undamaged house (in traditional style) looks - the tiered roofs echoing a castle and ornately clipped topiary trees
