Bled town, on the shores of an Alpine lake (2.4km x 1.2km) and with its medieval castle on the hill, has existed for a thousand years (the town was first mentioned on 10 April 1004 when the Holy German emperor, Henry II, gifted it to the Bishop of Brixen). Pilgrims travelled to the church of St Mary on Bled island and later tourists came for the gentle climate and thermal waters.
These days, the tourists take pletnas - covered gondola-cum-rowing boat - to visit the church.
The Julian Alps surround it
and there's a walking path on the shore
